Duncombe Park Show - 30th May 2016

A breezy but fine day and a beautiful setting were the backdrop for the NL&RC Duncombe Park Lurcher Show on Bank holiday Monday. A large crowd of competitors and spectators eagerly awaited the start of the show following the coursing and racing events. These were reintroduced to the show this year and provided a challenging and authentic environment for competing dogs and owners.

The testing coursing event was won by Sandra Barker's Indie and Reserve Champion was Ryan Caws' Shadow. Ron Cockerton won the 'Over's and 'Under's Racing with Brodi and Pip respectively and Under 23" Reserve Champion was Carole Brannan's Chintz.

The first showing classes were for children and judge Margaret Grant chose Jess Allott with Daisy as winner of the under 10's class. Junior Handler over 10 years and NL&RC Junior Members class were won by William Podson with Sky and Tissy respectively. William and Tizzy won the overall junior Championship qualifying for the NL&RC and Cock of the North Young Handler's finals.

Following the children's classes John Briggs began judging the Lurcher classes starting with the veteran's class where he awarded Shirene Smith's Harry first place. The next class, for the best pair of lurchers had thirteen entrants with their dogs and was won by Lace and Keaan owned by Samantha and William McKeown. The NL&RC members class had several good dogs competing for a place in the Member's Championship; judge Chris Ruddy chose Bridie owned by Rod Clark as winner. Next, the bull cross dog class was won by Sam Harkings with Nero and the best Bull cross Bitch was awarded to Nelly owned by Nathan Bowes, both qualified for the Uplands Bull Final. The Working lurcher class attracted a good entry of 16 dogs and after a thorough examination and great deliberation Graham Massey, the working lurcher class judge, chose John Slack's Cash as a worthy winner; he received both a trophy and handmade leather collar for first place.

The show then continued with the puppy classes starting with the under 6 months puppy. This was won by Charlie, a cheeky little pup owned by Dan Wood, who was presented with a silver tankard. The smooth puppy class was won by Jess owned by Katie Hartley and first place in the rough puppy class was awarded to Asra owned by Michelle Archer. These two puppies went forward to the puppy final and the judge awarded the Puppy Championship to Michelle Archer's Asra and Reserve Champion went to Katie Hartley's Jess.

The adult classes followed with John Briggs judging some quality dogs over the course of the afternoon. His final line up was carefully selected and following a thorough examination of all the dogs, he chose Sally Pearson's rough, fawn Bedlington Whippet "Beau" as winner of the Supreme Championship and Samantha McKeown's rough brindle greyhound / deerhound bitch "Marisol" as Reserve Champion. Sally was absolutely amazed and delighted with her win and Beau wore her velvet jacket with style.

The organisers would like to say a big thank you all those who attended the show, the judges, who did a tremendously professional job and to everyone who helped to make it an enjoyable day for everyone, we hope to see you all next year.
